Notepad is the most successful tool of all-time.  Notepad is simple to write.  A computer programmer can make a program like Notepad in a single day.  Yet, Notepad has existed since the 1980s in Windows 3.1, Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and all the way up to Windows XP of today.

Notepad is great tool to write quick text and save the text in simple character form.  I do not think there is a single programmer in the world who has not used Notepad.  One of the great about Notepad is the Notepad program starts fast.  To take a few quick notes is much quicker in Notepad than to start up Microsoft Word.

Also, since Notepad saves the text in simple character form, Notepad can be used to write programs.  Word for Windows does not save the text in simple character form.  Word has to save added information about each character such as formatting such as bold, font color and the like.  When word saves, it saves the text in coded format. 

So word cannot be used write computer programs, since programs are read in simple character form.  As a result Notepad was already used by programmers.  Notepad is a great little free program that just works for everyone.
